Setting the scene…
Unter den Linden, a mythical avenue celebrated by songwriters and poets, is the German equivalent of Paris’ Champs Élysées. Many embassies and well established luxury hotels are located in this street. From Museum Island to the Tiergarten (the Animals Park), the stroller takes a summer walk in the shade of its linden trees. The passerby enjoys a coffee or a hot spiced wine in autumn on the terrace of its numerous cafés. Tourists rush from all around the world to admire the Brandenburg Gate, a true national symbol around which Germans gather on celebration days.
But where does the prestige associated with Unter den Linden Avenue come from? And how did the Brandenburg Gate become Germany’s most iconic monument? Finally, by what quirk of fate and history does the Reichstag building, constructed in the 19th century to house the German parliament, turn its back on this national symbol?
So many questions to which this tour promises clear answers. Much more than a jumble of names and dates, it will bring you, with humor and simplicity, fascinating stories and crystal clear explanations that will significantly enhance your vision of Berlin and allow you to acquire a living comprehension of the city.
